Have you tried the GRO index, if the births were registered it should give mothers maiden surname

Several of these children seem to be with a family called Sturman in the censuses.

In 1881 Joseph and Isabella are nephew and niece to Charles Sturman.

Emily and William seem to be grandchildren of Charles and his wife Susan in 61/71.

I haven't looked thoroughly for all of them, but might help you if you follow them all up in the censuses.

That ties in with the mothers maiden surname on quite a few of the birth registrations  ;)

In the 1851 census, Charles and Susan Sturman have a Charles Edwards living with them. He is "son" of Charles. (he is with them in 1841 too)

There are three Sturman children, and a William Edwards, who is 73 and "father in law". Looking simplistically at this there are a couple of possible scenarios - Susan was an Edwards and "son" Charles may be Susan's illegitimate son ....

It looks a bit complex but I'm sure the family can be sorted out. Depending on what you are looking to find or which of the children you are descended from, you might like to consider buying one of the birth certificates which hopefully will help you find the name of the father and mother.

I recall seeing an Edwards family living next door to the Sturmans on one census I briefly glanced at. (there seems to be a number of Lyes around the ridges too)  :)

yekepa, re reading your query, I suspect you may already know much of this information. I suspect you haven't found the children with any parents on any census, hence your question.

Baptisms in the vicinity of Bury St Edmunds (Thingoe Deanery) have been transcribed by the Suffolk Family History Society.

Emily LYES, christened at Risby in November 1857, was a daughter of horse keeper Alfred and Elizabeth LYES of Bury St Edmunds.

I see no William c.1867 and no Mary c.1870 but several children of labourer Alfred LYES of Bury St Edmunds and his wife Elizabeth, with various spellings of her maiden name, are recorded at St Mary's church in that town:

1860 Sarah Elizabeth born 14 Feb.; late STURMAN; Stonebridge Barns
1861 William John ("LYE") born 10 June; late STURMEN; Stonebridge Barn
1864 Joseph Aaron born 30 January; late STURMEN; Stonebridge Farm
1866 Frederick born 1 April; late STERNE; Heath Building
1872 Jan. 27 Susan (born 20 April 1869) + Charles & Isabella (both baptized same day as Susan but dates of birth not given); late STEARNES; 32 Hospital Road

Another resident of 32 Hospital Road was the wife of James LYES, Sarah, who was buried in Bury St Edmunds cemetery on 20 January 1876, aged 67.

Elizabeth, wife of Alfred LYES of 32 or 54 St Peter's Terrace, was buried in that cemetery on 8 September 1873, aged 36. If Alfred remarried, perhaps he was the publican of 1 Ipswich Street who had four children with Maria late EMERSON / MARKELL or MARSKELL between 1876 and 1884 (baptized at St John's church in Bury St Edmunds 1877-84).
