Which state did he reside in?

Why are you unsure of his surname?

Where did you get the 1911 from?

Some details of the man would help, e.g. birth year and place of birth, death, sailed from where, etc.

A Joseph Brennan age 21 arrived onboard Kaikoura on 24 Sept 1911 in Queensland.
As you give so little information in your post, I do not know if this is the man you are looking for.

There seems to be some confusion.

Here is a 1926 marriage. Is this your person?

2220/1926
MERGAN Edward J
THOMPSON Ruby F
At BALMAIN NORTH

There is not a recorded COSBY/ MERGAN marriage in Randwick in 1926

Edward Joseph MERGAN of County Clare Ireland joined the Royal Australian Airforce  in WW2.

He was a well respected motor mechanic.
