Purchasing NZ WW2 records
« on: Friday 19 February 21 06:52 GMT (UK) »
My deceased Father served NZ in WW2 (Army). Am I able to purchase his file? Where should I apply to do so? I have his Service Number & basic details from the Auckland Museum War Memorial site.
Thanks,
Valsgirl

There is a link on this page, though it didn’t work for me:

https://www.armymuseum.co.nz/explore/research/family-history/

I am surprised there is a cost involved - Australian service records are digitised (many of them at least - it is a work in progress). They are online to view for free. I would have expected NZ to do the same.   :-\

Does the same go for RNZAF records for WW2 ?   Have they been digitised ?
thanks Pete

See the following link on the New Zealand Defence Force website. There is a form to complete, but according to the form there is no charge for the first copy, requesting more than one copy may lead to a $28 fee being charged. The New Zealand Defence Force covers all three services, so you can request a copy of an army, air force or navy service record.

The charge mentioned on the original link posted is a research charge made by the National Army Museum to look up service number, rank, unit, date of enlistment, last known address, and name and address of next of kin, none of which is needed to complete the actual form. Service number is useful, but not required.

Many thanks for the link,Craig.
I had looked on the NZ Defence Force site, but didn't find that!
For privacy reasons, I can understand why NZ will keep these records offline, until at least 80 years have pasted since the end of that war.
Cheers,
Valsgirl (Brisbane, Australia)

Hi Valsgirl,

I sent off about 20 years ago, for my Father's service record, had no problem getting it from the NZ Defence Force, from memory didn't have to pay.  This was before more things were available on line.

Does the same go for RNZAF records for WW2 ?   Have they been digitised ?
thanks Pete

No, though my father is on the Centopah, he does not show up on Archway for WW2, only for his death.

Cheers
KHP

I would also recommend contacting Errol Martyn on rafcoomands.com/forum He is the expert on RNZAF personnel, and has done extensive research in the archives. He is the author of the For Your Tomorrow trilogy on New Zealand airmen who died in service (plus  other books).
