Same birth registration/record two different surnames
« on: Saturday 20 February 21 14:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have come across three births, all with two different surnames.
The reference details are identical including the mmn and Christian name; but there are different surnames A and B. It is known, the mother divorced from her husband A. It is also known, she then lived with B, who is the other surname. A daughter recently ordered her birth certificate relating to B, as that is who she believed her father was. If I ordered the A version, would I receive the same information, with A’s name instead?
I have contacted the GRO, but while waiting, I thought I would ask here.

A birth to unmarried parents (if both are named on the entry) will appear in the index twice, once under each parent's surname. If the mother was using surname A and the father was surname B then it will appear under A and B.

If you order under the other name you would just get another copy of the same entry.

Thanks. I was baffled by it and the one who bought the certificate concerned. Your explanation fits their situation.
