I think I may have the wrong marriage
« on: Saturday 20 February 21 17:48 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone can give me advice on this as I think
I have made a mistake on an ancestor and just cant decide.

Margaret Mills was was born 1770 Sunderland Durham and was the daughter of Wallis (Wallace)
Mills and Margaret Simpson. The Mills family had a very long tradition of being shoemakers.
Her siblings were Ann, Sarah, Jane,  Joanna, John, Thomas, Jude and Judith.
I have her marrying Jonathan Woodifield in Bishopswearmouth 13 May 1800 making her around 30
years of age.  On the 1841 census Jonathans profession is shoemaker.
Their children were Hannah, William, Margaret, Johnathan, Ann, Jonathan and John.

I recently was told of another marriage
William Thomas Lilly b. 1766 marrying Margaret Mills on 11 Jul 1793 Sunderland when
Margaret was 23
Their second son was named Wallace (1802) so that made me doubt I was right. I cannot  find a
William or William Thomas on the 1841 census.

Any advice on which marriage is likely the right one is  much appreciated.

Hi
I think your best bet, given the time frame, is to check for baptisms for possible children of both marriages.
The BTs are available on Family Search (or Find My Past if you have access)

This time frame falls into the Shute Barrington period where we get a fair bit of extra info in the registers.

There are two Woodifield baptisms on this page Hannah and William, with Parents Johnathan and Margaret (nee Mills) - unfortunately this record says the mother was  'native of Newcastle'

If it were me, I'd check out any baptisms I could find for either couple before deciding.

Sorry, I think there may well be some years missing from the BTs for Sunderland,

another option to check baptisms would be Durham Records Online who have transcribed from the PR and that Wallace Lilly is coming up in the free search as being baptised in 1802, so there should be info in that baptism about his mother - and hopefully her birthplace

Thanks Tickety.
I figure I picked the wrong ones as I know my Margaret was born in the Sunderland but I will do the research you suggested to make absolutely sure.

You help is very much appreciated

Best wishes from Winnipeg

Jim

Its shame if you have taken a wrong turn, but it happens and its best to find out one way or another.
Durham Records online is a paysite, £1.50 for an individual record but they do a yearly sub which, if you are going to need a lot of Durham records, could well turn out to be a better option.

Its helped me a great deal over the years.
