Dr. Hopkins Pontyberem 1860s
« on: Saturday 20 February 21 20:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone has come across Dr. Hopkins of Pontyberem (or surrounding areas) around 1860. I ask as he may have trained my 2nd great grandfather William Griffiths of Gwendraeth Lodge/Dyffryn Bach, Pontyberem, in medical skills. William is described as a Sawyer in the census records but on some marriage certificates and other records as a Chemist! He being actually known the William Griffith “the chemist”. This confused me for a long time until I got in contact with some descendants of his who said he used to run a “apothecary” from his house at Dyffryn Bach and even provided copies from a medical book he owned in 1857. I always wondered how he managed to get his training and purely by chance came across an article today from 1866, where I believe it is him referred to and he mentions he was trained by a Dr. Hopkins. Therefore very interested to know who Dr. Hopkins might have been.

Thank you

Have you looked for him on available census entries?

I have found a possible. It could be a John Morgan Hopkins born around 1815 Fownhope, Herefordshire. He was living in Llannon in 1861 and later moved to Carmarthen.

If him he was involved in a sensational murder trial in 1884

And died the year after

According to the newspaper article he was convicted but ancestry criminal records have him found not gulity
