« on: Monday 22 February 21 17:05 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information on John Cheer and Emma Tombs who married September 1915  .John was born in Oxford and Emma Wootton Berkshire.

They adopted a baby girl in or around May 1917. The baby was called Birdie Diana.     I am looking for any information regarding the baby.   She is my husbands Mother and we have no birth certificate.  She believes she was born in Banbury.

Hi Ducati, what sort of info are you looking for with regard to John & Emma, their parents etc, and what do you currently know about them. There's a lot of info on them but do not want to send info you may already have.

John

The couple’s marriage (at South Hinksey) was 15 Dec 1913, rather than 1915.

Thank you for your prompt replies.   I am looking to find if anyone know anything about the adoption of the baby, as I said there is no birth certificate.   The baby Birdie Diana always thought that she was born in Banbury at 87 Warwick Road.   This is very close to where Banbury Workhouse was situated but may not have any relevance at all.

So really if anyone know about the baby.

Many thanks

I see that Birdie married in 1939 to a James R White.  Just before the 1939 came into force.  I see that her birth date is 7th May 1917 so I assume that John and Emma adopted her as a baby.

I am also assuming that John and Emma gave her the names of Birdie Diana.

It may be possible to track her birth by looking for a female birth in the JQ of 1917 with the surnames the same and in Banbury.

I wonder if Birdie got her place of birth wrong?  There is another possible candidate.

JQ 1917

Batting    Enid    Batting    Wycombe    3a   1453

If I put the above name into the search field on Find My Past, the only record that appears is the birth record, nothing else.

The only way you could know if Enid is the likely one is to obtain her birth certificate to see what her date of birth is.

She doesn't appear as dead between 1917 and 1939.

The GRO have her birth recorded as:-

BATTING, ENID       -
GRO Reference: 1917  J Quarter in WYCOMBE  Volume 03A  Page 1453  Occasional Copy: A

That occasional copy A will mean that the original birth registration has been amended in some way.  What I'm not sure about is whether the amendment will show on the original certificate.

A Rootschatter on that subject gave this reply:-

It would normally indicate a correction submitted after the original registration (but not a re-registration).

You would need a copy of the certificate to see what it was.

You will have to decide whether to get a pdf of this certificate to see if Enid's date of birth is the same as the one for Birdie - 7th May 1917 and if it is, what else it says.
