Martha Russell
« on: Monday 22 February 21 22:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm hitting a brick wall in tracing one of my ancestor's family so hoping someone can offer some inspiration.

Ancestor I'm tracing is Martha Russell who was born in Holytown on 18-Jul-1872 (father James Wright Russell, mother Jame McLuckie).

Martha married David Finlay (b 1868 Milton father William Finlay, mother Jane Clark) in 1889 and had two children .. William Findlay b1891 and Jessie Findlay b1895. Martha, David and William appear in the 1891 census living in Calder Road Bellshill.

So far so good.

Now here's the spooky bit.

In the 1901 census ... Martha doesn't appear and the family have split up. David is living with his parents, William is living with his uncle and Jessie is with her maternal grandparents. There is a poor law application for William in 1904 where it states his father has deserted him (no mention of mother) and he is offered a place in the poorhouse.

Beyond 1904 I can find no record of Martha or the rest of the family.  I have checked Scotlandspeople for deaths, marriages, censuses and also Ancestry and Findmypast for emigration records .. but nothing !!!

Anyone able to help / inspire ?

This entry from England 1911 might be worth following up further www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW3N-SZ4 (you need to register (free) and sign in to view).

Thanks Monica. Yes I found the same record on ancestry but couldn't find anything for either David or Jessie after 1911.

Presume this would mean that Martha had died for David to remarry but can't locate a death record :(.

Are you descended from -

  William FINDLAY b. 1891....or......Jessie FINDLAY b. 1895........?

How does this FINDLAY ancestor name parents on their own marriage record........described as "deceased"?

Hi wivenhoe

Martha’s father is my greatx2 grandfather, her brother David Russell is my great grandfather.

My interest is in Martha’s disappearance rather than the Findlays.

Thanks

Moved it on a little overnight. I have now found traced the son William Russell ... found a daughter Martha Russell Findlay which led me to him.

He died in 1928 and both of his parents are mentioned on his death certificate and neither are marked as deceased.

What a conundrum
