John Longhurst 1496
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 02:05 GMT (UK) »
Kia ora

Yes I know this is very early - no parish registers - but I know also that they were landowners and sometimes someone might know something I would like to know.  I am trying to find out who he married 'Edith' someone and when she died.

Any help much appreciated.

I expect you've covered all the usual avenues such as wills,The National Archives, and Surrey archives Bronwen.

There's an entry on findagrave for him. No image unfortunately.

I didn't quite understand where 'Agnes' came from halfway down your post.
I thought you were looking for 'Edith'?

An entry on myheritage.com has an Agnes Longhurst, born 1557,  as the daughter of John born 1515 (is this the same John as you have above?), and his wife Amy. She died in 1575 aged 18 according to the entry. John and Amy had 7 children. I don't have a sub so I can't look at the details.
Quite a few hits on Google for John and wife Amy.

Thanks Goldie.  I think I have covered off everything that I can think off to try and find the marriage and Edith's death.

I didn't mean to leave Agnes in there, I am trying to work out how she fits in, what part of the Longhurst that I have lots of info on.  I have the Agnes you mention but that is too late.  I have John and Amy with 15 children...  so better re-look at that.

It is this Agnes I am after:
Ralph Spooner husband of Agnes Longhurst
b.1522 St Margaret, Ockley, Surrey, Eng.
m.1545 St Margaret, Ockley, Surrey Eng.
d.1572 Feb 27 St Margaret, Ockley, Surrey, Eng.

Very very hot in Otautahi today.

Here are some Longhursts still earlier in Ockley. These are cases in the Court of Common Pleas. Images of the original documents and some other indexes are unavailable right now. They are on servers at the University of Houston, Texas, which were shut down last week. I hope they will be online again soon.

In 1415:
Surrey. John Wyntereshull versus John Gostrode, of Dorkyng, husbandman; Simon Longehurst, of Ockele, husbandman. Debt.

In 1468:
Sussex. Roger Leukenore, knight, versus Thomas Longehurst, of Okeley, Surrey, laborer; Richard Longehurst, of Okeley, laborer, and others. Trespass.

Kia ora Vance

That is marvellous, I shall investigate them.

I do have this Longhurst which is as far back as I have managed to go:

William Longhurst was born approximately 1476 in 1496 he married Sarah Peryer 1496 St John the Baptist, Capel, Surrey.  They had one child John Longhurst, St Margaret, Ockley, Moley Valley District, Surrey.
William Longhurst died 27 July 1541 St John the Baptist, Capel, Surrey, Eng.

Even earlier there is a Longhurst in the Poll Tax of 1381, (Part 2, page 546) edited by Carolyn Fenwick:

In Okele/Ockley, Willelmus/William Longhurst and Johanna/Joan his wife, terr' ten', assessed at 3s 6d. I suppose terr' ten' must mean a tenant of land or husbandman. Three and six was one of the larger assessments. There was just one other couple assessed at that amount, and one at four shillings.

Great thanks Vance.  As I am writing it up as a series of stories (along with a large family tree that will take all the strands in) I will refer to this in the intro to the Longhursts even though I cannot link them, very nice to have.

Here is another Longhurst family, in Padyngden/Paddington, Wotton Hundred, also in the 1381 Poll Tax, page 552:

Robert Longhurst, carpenter, and Agnes his wife, assessed at 2s.
John their son, assessed at 6d.

Paddington is in the parish of Abinger, adjacent to Ockley, where there were three manors: Abinger, Paddington Pembroke, and Paddington Bray.
