Primitive Methodist Church in Ballast Hills
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 03:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I have traced my family Coatsworth to the Ballast Hills Cemetery in Newcastle upon Tyne-Elizabeth, daughter of John and Thomasin Coatsworth buried 1808 born 1802 by Primitive Methodist Church Ballast Hills- Thomasin Coatsworth buried 31st Dec 1820 Ballast Hills Cemetery (no church reference on document) and John Coatsworth (native to Houghton le Springs Durham) buried 8th May 1826 (no church reference on document) or perhaps another John Coatsworth buried in Newcastle upon Tyne 1841? My query is- I am trying to verify John's year of birth, I can see the John d 1826 was 78 years old (born 1748?) on document. The only information available on Ancestry or Family search trees indicates he was born about 1765, but no proof again. There are possible baptism records for John in Houghton le Springs for 1750, 1751 and 1752 but not sure? Did the Primitive Methodist Church keep records for this period? I have tried to email the Methodist Church but no response. I have tried to attach documents but it will not allow. Regards Karen.

I am not sure there were Primitive Methodist churches in the mid 1700's.  I think they did not start until early 1800's.  Maybe Wesleyan at that time or just called Methodist but it was still a movement within the Anglican Church.  It did not formally break away until 1795.
