Relationship?
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 10:55 GMT (UK) »
I was idly working on my tree this last weekend. I had discovered a death date for a George Holdaway (~1844 - 1930). As I made the "quick edit" I noticed that Ancestry had kindly provided a relationship for me.

George Holdaway was the father-in-law of the aunt of the husband of the niece of the wife of the paternal 1st cousin of the wife of the grandnephew of the wife of my 1st cousin 3x removed!

I am left wondering - Is he even in my tree? Are we even in the same forest? Have I become a name collector?

Time for a cup of tea and sit down, I think.

Regards

Chas

Yes, it's a decision we all have to make. How far do we go in extended family connections?

I decided that I would stop once they no longer had the name I was researching. So if a woman married, then I did not pursue her offspring.

It's a hard decision, but I think (at least in my case) the line had to be drawn!

It goes rather against one's feminist principles, but it is sometimes hard not to feel that the women have moved to a different family. I have not made a conscious decision not to follow them, but I did give up on one of my gr grandfather's aunts, not so much because of the change of name, but because they were not very interesting! One of her sisters married a coastguard and moved to Norfolk, so the seafaring aspect kept me interested.
