Thornton in Dundee
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Wondering if anyone has access to original marriage records as need some extra information please.

Marriage between Jessie Thornton and Alexr Paterson.
28th June 1875 - Dundee, Angus
film No. 6035516

Father is James Thornton

Need to know if the record has father as deceased on it please? I have got them on the 1871 census, but because I can't see the written census I can't see if Head of household (Elizabeth Thornton) is Widowed.

So either census or marriage record would help. Thank you for any help

Karen

Appreciate any help

You have the same access as everyone else to these records. They are available to view at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It's pay-per-view, but modestly priced. The original census is also available there.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hello.
Thank you for your help. It was just a one off search in Scotland and minimum is to buy 30 credits. I know some people have the parish records on CD roms, like I have the London ones.
No worries, just a request.
Thank you for your advise

Regards
Karen

These are not parish records, they are statutory records.

Your 30 credits (£7.50) cost less than one statutory marriage certificate (£11) from England, and they would buy you 5 documents.

Where was Elizabeth in 1871, and how old was she?

In that case, the transciption on FindMyPast tells me that she was married.

Hi Karen

Maybe James father moved away from the home post the 1871 census.

There is a James Paterson, born St Vigean's c. 1824, showing on the 1881 census. I think he is by himself. Occupation different from weaver, showing as a hammerman. He is living at 27 Provosts Close, Arbroath.

In 1891, he is still living alone at 275 High St, Arbroath. He is working still as a blacksmith's hammerman.

Have you been able to confirm his parents' details? Maybe one of the later children's marriage certs would give a different occupation from weaver for him (hammerman would be good  ::)).

Possible death for Elizabeth Snr:

Elizabeth Thornton/Gray
Age 85
St Peter, Dundee
Ref 282/1 431
1908

Lots of family trees on A/try have Elizabeth's death as being in 1900 Arbroath. This Elizabeth Thornton however has Webster as a second surname. Doesn't look like anybody has actually looked at the original certificate on SP to realise it is not the correct one... ::)

Father James?

James Thornton
Age 74
Arbroath
Ref 272/1 421
1898

Scottish death certs, if you haven't seen one before, should include names of the deceased person's mother and father (if known to the informant).
