Sheffield marriage, 1856 Sedgwick - Bates
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 20:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello all
I'm not very familiar with Yorkshire records so I hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.
My 5 x great grandmother was Eleanor Seaton, married to James Bates in 1817 in Rotherham.
She has been a major brick wall for ages but I have a theory which I'm trying to prove or disprove (I'm quite certain about it but don't have anything much to back it up).
This is what I know and what I think:

1841 - (40) census states born out of county (Yorkshire)
1851 - (54) census states born Sheffield
1853 - James Bates dies
1856 - Eleanor Bates marries John Sedgwick in Sheffield (St. Mary).
1861 - (63) census states born in Ireland.
1871 - Eleanor Sedgwick aged 73 dies in Eccelsall Bierlow.

I wonder if anyone has access to the 1856 marriage record which would confirm (or not) if Eleanor was a widow and what her father's name was.  I appreciate that the chance of finding the family in Ireland without any more geographical info is quite slim, but it would narrow down the field a bit.
Any other ideas as to how to progress also gratefully received!
Thank you
Bev

Brilliant, Comberton.  I'm very grateful to you.
That confirms my theories.  So with a soldier father, she may have been born in Ireland but not Irish.
Many thanks.

Thank you, John.
The marriage cert has opened up a whole new escenario.  On the one hand I now know who Eleanor's dad was.  On the other, a soldier could come from just about anywhere.   ;D

P.S.  Your find could be very promising.  I think I have the son William in 1851, born in Kent but living in Ecclesall Bierlow.  He has a daughter called Eleanor.
In 1841 the head of his household is an Eleanor Crookes.  Perhaps Richard Seaton died and his widow remarried.  Lots to investigate, thanks again!
