1841 census for Charlotte Smith, Gloucester, St Philip and St Jacob
« on: Wednesday 24 February 21 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find my great grandmother, Charlotte Smith, and I found this census record which puzzles me. There is a long list, involving several pages, of teenaged girls with stated occupations (Charlotte being a weaver at age 18). In the upper left hand corner, there is a place name but it is illegible to me, on every page! Can you help me to identify the nature of this institution, please?

Top left hand corner gives the name of the street, in ths case Phoenix Street. The first name for that particular entry is Sophia Hercombe and her occupation is House Keeper. Therefore I would say that your ancestor is living in a lodging house.

There are very website on the net including by the bafhs.org.uk

SS Philip and Jacob - BAFS

.....

The building of the canal triggered the development of Barton Hill.  the biggest of which was employed up to 2000 people, many of them  woman, (and, in it's earlier days, young girls)...  though working conditions are said to have been poor.  New houses sprang to serve the factory workers, starting with Phoenix Factory and Great Western Streets. etc. etc.

I appreciate you steering me to this particular site. I’m new to genealogical research and not too proficient at it yet, (tho I seem to be a good detective 🙂). I’m glad for the help.
