« on: Wednesday 24 February 21 17:29 GMT (UK) »

Pte 357958 John Wignall aged 18 Killed in Action 09/08/1917 but Medal Card implies he wasn't in action with the 1/10th at the time on his Death ?

Any ideas who he was in action with ?

He died from wounds at Boulogne Gen. Hospital so sustained those
some time before.
In June the 10th. were providing working parties under RE supervision
in the forward trenches.
These positions if discovered were shelled.
In July they were preparing for the forthcoming offensive.
On the 20th. they were in the trenches at Wieltje Ypres
where they sustained casualties from shelling & the following night
from gas.
There's no mention of providing working parties in July.
It's unlikely he received his wounds early August as the 10th. were
heavily involved in the Battle of Pilkem Ridge & wouldn't have been
providing working parties at that time.
It's difficult to pinpoint exactly when he was wounded or which RE Field Coy.
he was attached to.
There were 3, 419, 422 & 433.

Cheers Jim1 that most likely pins his wounding down to 20 th July rather than looking for him in action with 1/10th

Bear with me I may have found something. I've had to switch between 4 diaries
to try & get near to when & where.
Working parties from the 1/10th. were attached to 422 Field Coy. RE & had been for several months.
From at least June they were working on maintaining the bridges & roads leading from Vlamertinge
to Ypres.
During July they sustained some casualties mainly from gas.
On the 23rd. July 2 attached Infantry were wounded by shellfire.
They pulled out after that & moved back to Vlamertinge in preperation for the offensive.
On the 31st. July they were called up to the front line at Wieltje & still had the working
party with them.
So in short wounded on the 23rd. at the Canal Bank Vlamertinge or on the 31st. at Wieltje.
There are no reports of casualties that day except for an attached Infantry Capt.

OK. In all the diaries I've looked at ( I'm up to 5 now) there's mention of the Canal Bank
where the RE were billeted.
The Canal Bank was a series of dug-outs called big elephants (made from corrugated iron)
on the Yser canal at the north end of Ypres not Vlamertinge as I previously thought.
