I’m following the ancestors of Annie ROBINSON (sometimes called Annie Bean Robinson) b. Chester 1878.

1901 census Annie, (Lightfoot), living in Ashton, Cheshire with husband and 2 children.
1911 census Annie is living in Ashton with husband John and 7 more children

I am struggling to find much about William Robinson of Yorkshire and her mother Eliza.  I did find a marriage of William Robinson b.1843 Fridaythorpe, Yorkshire to an Elizabeth Scarll (of Suffolk) July qtr 1868 in Scarborough, but I can’t find it again.  The fact that John George Robinson was born 1876 Scarborough suggests that the marriage may have been there.

As for identifying an “Eliza” born in Chester, Cheshire without a surname I’ve been unable to move forward with this.

Can anyone help me find out more about William and Eliza Robinson please?  Thank you.

Thank you Rosie.  Could William have been married twice, once in Yorkshire, possibly Scarborough and again in Cheshire, possibly Chester?

1881 has William Robinson age 23 bn Friday Thrope (RG11/3553 f64 p10

1891 has him age 44 bn Yorkshire. (RG12/2860 f47 p22)

1881 and 1891 Elizabeth is with the children stating she is married, no husband showing on census.

If it is 'your' William that she married then he clearly left her for 'Eliza'.  He would not be in a position to marry Eliza as he was still married to Elizabeth

Thanks. Can you tell me how to find the census record from the reference numbers  you’ve given me please.

I can find various John George Robinson’s b. 1876 born Scarborough, Yorkshire but can’t positively link them to parents William Robinson born Yorkshire and a mother Eliza Saunders (or any name) born Chester, Cheshire.

Could it be that William marries Elizabeth Scarll in 1868, has two children, 1871 and 1874, then he meets Eliza Saunders who has moved from Chester to work in service in Scarborough. William gets Eliza pregnant with John George and the three flee to Cheshire to be near her family? And that they don’t actually marry?

In the mean time I’m going to try and find a marriage for William and Eliza Saunders in Cheshire.

The census references can be used on Ancestry & FindMyPast census searches, you just need to select which census year and there are spaces on the search form for that information.  Alternatively search in Scarborough for the children, you have their birth year from the registrations.

I believe that the John George was the registration entry I posted and that he was the illegitimate son of Eliza Saunders, the birth certificate would confirm/disprove this.  William would not be in a position to marry Eliza as he was still married to Elizabeth if he was the William you are looking for.  The 1881 census for Elizabeth indicates another child c1875 (Sarah).

One extra piece of information I have just come across in the 1891 census -
William Robinson b.1876 Scarborough
Abode: Longley farm, Kelsall (servant)

Is this another child or John George with a change of name as it’s the same year?  Both William senior and son are living in the same village. Haven’t looked to find him in 1881 yet.
