Carte Postale soldier photo Joseph Rigby, 9th Lancers
« on: Wednesday 24 February 21 19:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I have a photo of my grandfather, Joseph Rigby, 9th Lancers, dated about 1920, on a carte postale. On the reverse side to the left, is very feint writing which is only visible when the image is darkened. As I only have the technology of my phone, I was wondering if anyone could make it more readable. I understand if it’s not possible. Also was the carte postale only used in France? Many thanks as always.

Japeflakes I have darkened it, I can definitely see a number. Maybe it’s a service number at the very top in the correspondence portion. I think I may be asking the impossible here, but I’ve only just noticed it and i’ve had the photo for years.

Not sure if You have the original Photograph, or just the copy on Your Phone. If You have the original, then shining Ultra Violet Light, on the spot, might reveal the faint writing.

Thank you. Yes that’s where I was looking. There appears to be writing further down as well.

Can anyone enlighten me as to whether a Carte Postale would only be used in France? My grandfather was too young for WW1, being born in 1906, so I really don’t know where France would come in. He did serve in Palestine in the 1920’s.

Yes French & possibly used in Belgium also.
The British Army was in Germany into the 20's
so would have passed through France.
