Two streets - how close together?
« on: Friday 26 February 21 11:25 GMT (UK) »
Back in Leicester in the mid 1800s how close would Belgrave Gate have been to Lower Church Street. Does anyone know if 201, Belgrave Gate might have had some significance back then - say a workhouse address? I have managed to get photos online of both areas but can't seem to find out how close together they were. I would be grateful to find out anything about this.

201 Belgrave Gate was a private residence in the 1851 census. What year are you interested in?

Oh that's good to know ShaunJ thank you. The main time frame I was looking at was 1840 - 1850 so that's great.

Do you mean Lower Church Gate? Church Gate Starts at the junction with Belgrave Gate and Lower Church Gate is the continuation after it meets the Junction with St Margaret's Street and Sanvey Gate.

You can find the streets on this map:-

Sorry DCB, yes I do mean Lower Church Gate. Thanks for the map. I have studied it long and hard and have found Church Gate and Lower Church Gate but I can't find Belgrave Gate at all. Is it not marked on the map. Perhaps it's the bit where the word TRAMWAY is printed? Anyway, what I wanted to know is how close they were and the answer would seem to be - very close. So thank you so much for that.

Belgrave Gate is much clearer on this map, but it doesn't name Lower Church Gate.

David

I forgot that you turn left at the top of Churchgate into The Haymarket, which then becomes Belgrave Gate after a short distance

Comparing the 1887 map linked by David with a modern A-Z it looks like Lower Church Gate along with Gold Street and most of Pasture Lane have disappeared under modern day St. Margaret's Way.

About twenty years ago I parked daily in the stub of Pasture Lane (off Sanvey Gate) to walk up Church Gate to my job in a sandwich shop off Gallowtree Gate.
