Would anyone be able to help with explaining the role of an almspeople shepherd. this shows on a 1851 census for an 81 year old relative. Many thanks

So he shepherds people not sheep.  A flock of a different sort you might say, alms would suggest the needy or the elderly perhaps.

An alternative reading is that he and his wife were in receipt of alms and that his usual job was a shepherd. He was the right age for alms. His shepherding job might have been seasonal. He may have been required only at busy times such as lambing and shearing.
The daughter was a dressmaker. She wouldn't need an occupation if her father was well-off.
