Duke Street Liverpool 1901
« on: Friday 26 February 21 16:11 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the life of a 3xgreat uncle, John Hull. He was admitted to Liverpool Workhouse in 1903 and his address is given as 21 Duke Street. He is still in the workhouse in 1911 according to the census. He died in 1915 in the workhouse infirmary but under rank/profession his death certificate states he was of 21 Duke Street, formerly a mercantile Seaman.
I am trying to find 21 Duke Street in the 1901 census but not had any success. I can't find John anywhere on the 1901 census, perhaps he was at sea, but just wondering who was at Duke Street.

Can anyone help please?
Thank you

When was he born and where?

Did he have a wife or children at the time?

He was born in 1839 Tarleton, Lancs. He did not marry as far as I know. On his admission to the workhouse in 1903 it says single, and his brother Henry(my 2x great grandfather) of Leyland is given as relation.

21 Duke Street today looks quite large. If it is the same house in 1901 I am thinking it was probably a boarding house. It would just be good to confirm this or otherwise.

21 was a lodging house. Proprietor in 1901 was Daniel Harris.

Hi, sorry for the late response. Yes this is the family. Henry was my 2xgreat grandfather although I have only worked this out through DNA and family hearsay and a lot of detective work over the last 10 years or so.  I am just researching other members of this family to see what happened to them (I'm nosey!). ;D
A roper was a rope maker. As far as I know John was called John but who knows. I had a grandfather called John but was always Jack to family and friends. His wife, my grandmother, was Ellen but everyone called her Nellie! ;D
