It’s all a big puzzle. Why did he go to the IOM? If they had the children baptised, why didn’t they marry?

Not tracked Samuel down any further back, as his date and place of birth are impossible. England in 1871, Aston, Oxfordshire in 1891, and London (possible as it’s William again) in 1911 in Pontypridd, south Wales. Not found him in 1901. Was hoping to go back to the first place i had him, ie the IOM, and see if i missed anything.

Oh yes definitely William on that one isn't it and the other one has been written over.  Intriguing.

There's a William Brooks baptised in Oxfordshire 6 Mar 1831 with parents David & Elizabeth.

He is in Oxfordshire 1841/1851 so will see what happens to him just in case.

It gets worse! I searched for some years for Samuel and Elizabeth after 1891 when they are in Merthyr Dovan, near Barry, south Wales. Nothing! Son Joseph married in Pontypridd in 1896 and there’s a death there of an Elizabeth Brooks in 1895. But when i asked Pontypridd reg office she was the wife of William Brooks so i ignored it. I then discovered that she died at the same address as Joseph when he married so it’s very likely the same man. To cap it all, William married his son’s future mother in law. 🙄

There's a William Brooks baptised in Oxfordshire 6 Mar 1831 with parents David & Elizabeth.

He is in Oxfordshire 1841/1851 so will see what happens to him just in case.

Quite a tangle then by the sounds of it!  Hard for me to find 1891 & 1911
but you have that already.
