I think you need to be a bit more specific?

For example, on the 1881 census, in Somerset there are:

354 peopled named Godfrey
62 people named Dunkerton
and 0 people named Friday.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Sorry I'm new at this.  Thought I was specific yesterday with date periods.  Was hoping to find other chatters with same surname interests.  I'm looking for these family names in Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Bruton, Evercreech, Pilton, West Pennard.  Thanks again and appreciative of any hints.

Free reg is here.

https://www.freereg.org.uk/

On the homepage of Rootschat, right down the bottom in the brown bit up you can see “surname interests” check there to see if anyone has entered your families.

Otherwise Rootschat works best if you tell us where you are starting from.  Ie the last confirmed mention of the names you are following.

Your time span is for 300 years - approx 10-15 generations.

Civil records (births, marriages and deaths) only started in 1837 - less than 200 years!
Before that you will need parish records.
Records from 1600s and 1700s aren't always easy to find.
Censuses only started in 1841, and go up to 1911.

Start with a known person (grandparents?) and move back a generation at a time, using censuses and BMD records, to ensure you have links between generations.

Good luck!

Hello Anne

Welcome to Rootschat. These people are in my husband's family.

Emily Godfrey b 1842 at Compton Dundon, parents John Godfrey 1819-1876 and Eliza Cox born in Wells 1818.  Emily  married George Witcombe b Meare.

Richard Godfrey b 1778, died 1851 both at Edington had at least 2 children.
John Godfrey b 1811 who moved to Puriton
Daughter Ann Godfrey baptised at Meare in 1813, she married John Whitcombe 10 October 1847.

If you write messages with what you know,  e.g. who married who and a date. The more info you give on your message, the more likely people are able to make a connection with their family. If you need any help looking something up, there are often people who will help.

Good luck. Heather

Greetings and welcome to Rootschat.
When did your folk leave Somerset for Australia please?

I have a large GODFREY family of:
Charles Godfrey Ag lab

BIRTH ABT 1815 • Edington, Somerset, England
DEATH 11 SEP 1886 • Wells, Somerset, England

Several of his children left for Australia.
Do you have your family research on an online public tree so that we might view how far you had already achieved?
