I had posted on the thread after I had received a PM asking for help.   I have again checked several online indexes looking for a likely death in Australia.  I have not found a likely death.

The person of interest may well be alive.  If alive and residing anywhere in Australia, they have a legal expectation to privacy of the individual.

ADD ..... I have living relatives who are old enough to have become parents in 1938.  They are concerned about sensitive personal information being published.

Here is another possibility … this is a SHIP … the Canberra.  So page 50 of 62.  Tourist class, arriving June 1963.
https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=11990360&S=50
Mr and Mrs …. With their proposed address for Tasmania.
...

This is the only ship arrival in 1963-64 with a passenger with the right name, so I think it's a good candidate.

There is a UK marriage, 2nd Qrt 1963 Chesterfield, Derbyshire, to H... B... that matches the arrival information, so is it possible he married just before leaving?

Electoral rolls suggest that this couple did not stay in Tasmania, but moved to Victoria - occupations toolmaker; secretary

I'm a little more doubtful, but I suppose nothing is impossible  ...

Apparently the guy who arrived in 1963 on the Canberra was born abt 1935/6 in England (i.e. not Scotland).
This is his arrival in Melbourne on 16 Jun 1963

^Well found, I couldn't see those details in the other document -  yes, I think it eliminates this couple.

Hi Lynne
Silly question perhaps, but if you know so little about him apart from the facts you have shared in your Original post, then on what grounds do you decide it is not the right man?

Seems you may be chasing the wrong John
There is one born 1939 Paisley.
But under deaths there is one who died 1939 Paisley age 0.

There are 9 other births of a John 1937-1940 in Scotland.
3 of those have second given names does Kennedy, Muir or McCann fit into his family.
