I'm having trouble in sorting out several men named John Morrell and am hoping someone here can help me.

Is John Morrell, born about 1806 in Tiverton, Devon, England and married to Mary Heath Foster, the son of William Morrell and Sarah Doble OR of John Morrell and Ann Stevens?

There is another John Morrell who is the son of John Morrell and Ann Stevens, who was born in 1807 in Tiverton.

One factor so far that ties John Morrell, born 1806, to William and Sarah (Doble) Morrell, is that in the 1851 census, Edwin Morrell, John's nephew through his brother William, is living in John's household and is an apprentice hairdresser. It makes sense that he would have his nephew living in his household and learning the trade.

I have the baptism records, marriage records and census records but I don't have the connection between John's family after marriage, back to the correct parents.

I'd like to have more confirmation of William and Sarah as his parents OR better confirmation that the other John is the son of John and Ann (Stevens) Morrell. Does anyone have the answer or can you point me to some online records that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!
Ellen

Hello Ellen and welcome to RootsChat.

I can't help with his parents, though I think it probable that if nephew Edwin is with him in 1851 then it is the John born 1806 that is more likely.

There are a few mentions of John in newspapers of the day. Happy to transcribe the articles if you haven't seen them, though they don't give any family information.

Another avenue to explore is whether John is mentioned in any wills. Have you checked to see if John left a will, or if either of the proposed fathers left wills? Or siblings that may mention John or his family? I don't have time now, but can have a look tomorrow.  :)

Thank you maddys52. I would really appreciate the newspaper articles if you found some. I'm going to have to look into the wills. Fingers crossed!

No worries.

In Kelly's 1841 London Post Office Directory:
"Morrell John & Co. hairdressers & perfumers. 120 Goswell st"

"WANTED, in a family residing a short distance
from town, a steady, respectable, young woman as HOUSE-
MAID and PARLOURMAID. No man-servant kept. For the address
apply to Mr. Morrell, hairdresser and perfumer, 13, Wells-row, near
Highbury-place, Islington."

Committee.
The Vestry Clerk stated that Mr. Morell had done
little or nothing to carry out the works to which he had
consented before the magistrate.
Peremtory orders were made that the works should be

St. Paul's-road, Highbury, builder and contractor, and of
Ring-cross, Holloway, coffee-house keeper.
The balance sheet commences in February, 1859, and

Morell, hairdresser, of Wells-row, Highbury, holds a bill

who had been in business for 16 years, had kept his books
very imperfectly, and as he had been obliged to assume a
large amount of his receipts and payments, the accounts
could only be considered as "imaginary."
   The bankrupt passed his examination."
