William Kirk of east Leake
« on: Monday 01 March 21 17:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I’m new to  rootschat

I’d like some advice on where I can look to find my ancestor.

William Kirk (Kirke/Kerk/kyrke) born approx 1699,
Died & buried in East Leake
A farmer
Married to Elizabeth. (Unsure if she is a second marriage as I can only find a wm & eliz married in 1747 - which is too late for his sons birth)

William jnr born 1725 according to grave, unsure where,

The hints coming up on ancestry & find my past are leading to the wrong direction (I think) or a second marriage, but I can’t find out when William snr moved to east leake or where from

The family story is that the Kirk’s moved from Scotland to London then up to the midlands.

Any advice greatly appreciated
R

Hi

A few more details please

William Kirk Snr.,  what is the date of death, assume you have  birth 1699 because you have an age at death possibly from a grave stone

William Kirk Jnr, when and where did he die

What info do you have on Elizabeth? Have you obtained her name also from Gravestone?

Hi

Did see this burial, obviously when he died he must have been William K, senior having also had a son William.

Above arrived at because Nottingham RO has his will dated July 1821 probate 1822
William Kirk Snr., of East Leake, Farmer.

We need to know exactly what info Kirk 1974 has.

The PR transcripts for East Leake on the Notts FHS CD only go back to the mid-late 1700s, and the earliest Kirk burial is 1765. The earliest Kirk baptism on the disc in East Leake is 1764. There's nothing at all in the time scale for the baptism of William who died in 1821.

Neither is there an an obvious burial for the older William. There are 3 burials listed in the 1700s for William Kirk but all are liste as "son of ---" so presumably wouldn't be a married adult with children of their own. Neither is there any burial listed for Elizabeth. Maybe she died before the PR listing started?

So maybe the OP can point us in the direction of where s/he found their info?

I have the grave stone for William snr died 1763 in east leake.

I assume that he moved with his wife to east leake with William jnr and possible other siblings which is why I can’t find any birth record in east leake.

This would be correct if my family stories are right.

My question is
Where do I look to find him, is there a list of alternative places to look?
I want to look at the horse taxes as we know he was a farmer.

PS I don’t know all the abbreviations yet!

Hi,

You are not likely to find the information you are looking for on the internet, because neither
Ancestry, FindMyPast or Familysearch have full Church Records for East Leake.  Per post by Annie N.F.H
Society have not transcribed all the registers.

Familysearch ( Latterday Saints) have filmed all East Leake Registers not available on line you can order the films to view at one of their centres.

Wills are another source which often supply info on family connections, as are Enclosure Awards and Land tax records.

Think you will find it is not possible to visit any holders of records due to Covid restrictions.

The full Parish Registers are held at
Nottinghamshire Archives
County House
Castle Meadow Road
