Hi ,

Did Lizzie marry Walter Maxwell 1898 Bridgeton Lanark ?
There is also a death for an Elizabeth Maxwell(other surname Cardle) , age 53 , 1931 Hillhead Lanark.

There were no Cardle birth registration in West Calder, which is in West Lothian, 1875 - 1879.

How sure are you on the place of birth?

Can find  no trace of her or her parents before 1897

What was her father's occupation?

As you've not mentioned her dob I'm assuming you don't have her birth certificate?

Is it your public tree on Anc*y? Gives Elizabeth's spouse as Walter Maxwell

Could she have been illegitimate and recorded under her mother's name?

1901 census has Walter Maxwell with wife Elizabeth, 23, born West Calder.

Exactly how is her mother named on her marriage certificate? Is she 'Margaret Cardle MS Robertson' or just 'Margaret Robertson'?

I can't see any obvious candidate in the 1881 census.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
