John Phillips brn 1852 Cork, Ireland

I am trying to find any info on my late wife’s great grandfather John Phillips, the only positive info I have is that when he married in Manchester in 1882, his father William was a soldier. There is a John Phillips brn in BUTTEVANT around that time, but cannot find any birth details, in the family bible his birth date in 20th May 1852.

Is John the soldier b 1852 Buttevant?
You would have to look at his record which is available from Fold3 - a pay site.
It seems to fit.
Pension date September 1882
Marriage October 1882

Do you know the name of William's wife?

May not be relevant but a William Phillips, of Royal Barracks Dublin (m) Margret Day on 26 Feb 1851.  His occupation is shown as Private in 43rd Regt.   See:-

There is an army birth for a John Phillips, 43rd Regiment, at Templemore in 1852.

There is also a service record for John Phillips.
8th  Hussars.

John Phillips 27 yrs (but looks to be 29 yrs) is a Private stationed at Canterbury Barracks.
It is not obvious which regiment he is in but this thread here indicates that 8th Hussars was one of the relevant regiments.

Thank you everybody for your ideas, John was married to a Emma Banks Foster.
Regarding the marriage of a William of the 43rd Reg in Dublin in 1851, I’m wondering if they then were in Buttevant, Cork a year later and my John was born there. Are army birth records available for that time and place. Can I find any further details of the John brn in 1852 in Templemore ShaunJ

You would need to order the certificate that Malc27 was going to order on the other thread.

The army school information provided on that thread by Gortonboy gives a birth date of 29 May which is pretty close to the one you are looking for.

"In 1848 the 43rd returned to Ireland, and in 1851 embarked at Cork for South Africa, to take part in the Kaffir War".

so i suppose he could have fathered the child whilst stationed in Cork in 1851,,with the birth being 9 months later in 1852?
