Curiously it names his next of kin as "Brother John".

The depot company of 43rd Regiment was stationed at Buttevant in May 1852.

Just to add that the bulk of the 43rd Regiment was in South Africa in 1852 so the John Phillips birth reported by the regiment in Ireland must have been to a soldier of the depot company, and the depot company was at Buttevant in May of that year.

Hi Everybody
Thanks again for your research, I think the John brn Buttevant is my John, Buttevant is in the county of Cork, Templemore is not. He was definitely born in Cork. The attested date in 1866 works perfect for the Buttevant John also, not able to access the findmypast file, but don’t understand how his next of kin can have the same first name. The signatures are very similar Shaunj.
So it looks like John’s father William was in the 43rd regiment and John possibly joined the 8th Hussars in 1866 at 14 years of age, do we know where he enlisted.

JP enlisted in the 8th Hussars at Dublin. It's consistent with attendance at the Royal Hibernian Military School.

Possibly a step-brother - did his widowed mother marry someone who already had a son John perhaps.
