Default Folders for Windows 10
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 09:33 GMT (UK) »
I've carried out a clean install of Windows 10 and have ended up with all files being saved by default to OneDrive.   I want to change the default to my hard disk and if I follow the instructions to go to Settings/System/Storage I can see the different categories, with both New Documents and New Photos being saved to OneDrive by default.   The problem is, I can select my hard disk from the drop down but when I press select it returns to OneDrive.

Any suggestions??

Harry

During Windows 10 setup, you will have seen a “Back up your files with OneDrive” - and you clicked Yes.

That forces the default to OneDrive, and there doesn't seem to be an option to change it back.

Files are actually saved to a local folder, and OneDrive synchronises this to Microsoft's cloud when given a chance. If this works for you, fine.

If not, you could do another clean install, but it might be easier to back up your files somewhere else, then set up a fresh account on the PC. If you would like to use your original username, you could then use that fresh (temporary) use to delete the misbehaving account and recreate it with the right options.

Once you have things working properly locally, THEN open the OneDrive application; it will ask for a login details. Then you can copy things back and forth under YOUR control.

EDIT: Try under Settings, System, Storage, Change where new content is saved. You should have an option to change things back to "Local Disk (C:)"

andrewalston,

Thanks - I remember doing that !!

Settings, System, Storage is where I tried to change the defaults, but it wasn't playing ball.

Thanks anyway

" Change where new content is saved" should be down the bottom. It gives places to store apps, maps etc. besides.

You might need to reboot afterwards to make it take proper notice.

Problem has now resolved itself - after carrying out a clean install using a link from Microsoft, over three days, Windows 10 has now been updated 4 separate times and is now working correctly.   I have to ask - why have a link on a website that delivers an out of date version of the OS?
