Chelsea Pensioner Records
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 17:42 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how to access Chelsea Pensioner and Soldier Service records? I have found a summary of such a record on Ancestry for Robert Sherlock, born 1796 in Carlow and who served with the 29th Regiment of Foot. Ancestry want a very large subscription payment above what I already pay them and I wondered if there is an alternative route to these records. I also subscribe to FindMyPast and they were able to provide a great deal of information about his ultimate discharge from the service but I'm reluctant to pay even more for just this bit of his record.

Hi....

Do you have his details from the Regimental registers of service?

Also not happy that you have to have a fold account to view some of the military records.

I have about 16 pages from Findmypast with great detail about his service and his discharge and I’m trying to find this last piece. In these pages are records of him losing his arm in an accident and his commanding officer requesting approval for his discharge.

Try the national archives
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8741138

This is the WO 97 record that has already been sighted on FindMyPast.

The record on the paysite Fold3 is from WO 116 and relates to a different man, who applied for pension in 1880.

The many pages of service records on FindMyPast are from

Wo 97 - Chelsea Pensioners British Army Service Records 1760-1913

The records on Fold 3 also state that they are

Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents; Reference Number: WO 97

However FindMyPast also have some records for Robert Sherlock described as

Wo 23 - Royal Hospital Chelsea: Admission Books, Registers, And Papers 1702-1876

I’d just stick to FindMyPast.

I think from memory there was a question as to whether there was a missing image at the end of Robert Sherlock's WO 97 record on findmypast.
I do recall (when I could access that site!) that there quite often seemed to be an arrow to click, suggesting another page, at the end on those army records, but it never appeared. I did wonder if it was some technical glitch, and maybe there was no more! But I don't know.
