Have I hit a BRICKWALL or a well HIDDEN family secret
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 18:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello Fellow Root Seekers,

I am hoping that I can be pointed in the right direction.

I have been searching for information regarding my late paternal Irish grandmother.  I have very little information about her.
Facts:
-Her date of marriage to my late paternal grandfather
- The name listed as her father on her marriage record
-Date of birth for their children
-Date of death

Heresay:
-estimated year of birth 1899 / 1900
-She had a brother.  Name known and estimated date of birth
- Her mother was unmarried
- Her brother seems to have her mothers last name
-Her mother was possibly never married

i have used various sources and sites to gather information.  RootsIE, Ancestry, Family Search, My Heritage, Just Ask, Irish Genealogy but have not had any luck.

Could I be wrong in thinking that this is a secret well buried or is there a way to research this that I have not thought of yet?

Please Help!

Is it her birth you are looking for?
Do you feel able to supply some names and dates to those facts you have listed?

Hello

Thank you for your reply.

Her name is Mary Horgan
Unknown where in Ireland she was born.
Reading her death certificate I estimate her birth year to be 1899/1900.
She has John Horgan listed as her father on here marriage record.
Mary Horgan was also known as Poll Horgan or Poll Ahern or Mary Cairney (married name)
Mary married Matthew James Cairney in July 1929 and passed away in Midleton in April 1966.
Her brother was Matthew Ahern. Father unknown. Passed away in March 1964, unmarried without any known children. His occupation was labourer/painter.
A death record was found for a Mary Ahern, which listed Mary Cairney, her daughter notified of death. The address noted on this was Midleton and dated 1940. It was also noted that she was a spinster.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

If she was born in Ireland hopefully you will have enough information to find her birth registration-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
Do you know her religion? Next search for her in 1911 and 1911 census- if you are luckily she might be staying with family- religion should be listed.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie
There are some R.C. Cork records here although they may not be recent enough.

If you want to share some details we can try to help find records or give more advice. Once you've made another post you'll be able to use PM (Personal Message) system here if you would rather not post details online.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello

I have done research through Irish Genealogy. I have also contacted the Mallow Heritage centre and enlisted the help of a genealogist.

I have not yet done a dna test. Something to think about.

Hi Aghadowey

Mary was Roman Catholic and is buried at the local Catholic Church in Midleton.

PM chat would be great. It could offer a new thought pattern of how to approach this search.

Hi Paul,

I did a lot of searching and think I found the correct family.

It seems Mary Ahern was born in Cork City in the Lying In Hospital on 26 June 1901  No father on
birth cert.  The family must have been well off if Mary went to a private hospital in Cork City 1901 to have her child.    Mary the mother's address is given as Old Market Street, Fermoy Co. Cork.

Mary's parents were John Ahern a Harness maker  and Margaret Cotter   Grandparents of Mary born 1901)

John Ahern and Margaret had  the following children ( 1901 census)

Mary 22
Hannah 20
John 12
Richard 11
Kate 10

had four boarders also  John Henry Staight 47 Circus agent
James Lombard 66
Patrick Donovan
Richard Corcoran

They married at the RC church in Rathcormac, Co. Cork on 3 Feb 1872  witnesses were
Ann Ahern and Margaret Murphy

Mary Ahern was born 12 March 1877 and her address was Old Market Street , Fermoy
the same address she gives to the Lying Hospital.

I feel fairly sure this is the Mary you are searching for.

I can't find either Mary in  1911 census.   Did she go to Scotland and meet her husband Matthew James Cairney?

Hopefully this will help break down your brick wall.

Mary
