Questions
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 19:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone ,
 I hope everyone is well.
I have a Thomas Rowland Thexton who was killed in WW1. I have the details of his WW1 army service but I believe he was in the army at some point before this. On Ancestry I only can find the War details. How do I go about finding if he was in the army before this?
And I suppose it was possible to not be on a census  as the did this. Is there any other way of finding a Mum and son in 1901?

Thanks Everyone .I really appreciate the help on this site. You are all brilliant. I am getting better at looking for some things but occasionally hit a wall.

For clarification, is it Thomas Rowland THEXTON you are looking for in 1901 or is that a different query?

Assuming it is the same man, he is not in the military on census. There is also a criminal record for 1912 that is also not military. What date do his military records start?

1893 marriage to Sarah Ann Lilley

1894 birth of Thomas Gilbert Thexton

1899 birth of Harry Thexton

1901 4372/100/34
Thomas G Thexton is a visitor in the Wood household in Sheffield

1901
Thomas Rowland Thexton is single  :-\ and boarding in Sheffield

Presumably we are looking for Sarah Ann and Harry

The family (minus Thomas G) are together in 1911

1881 - with parents John and Esther and siblings in Sheffield.
1891 - with parents John and Esther and siblings in Ecclesall Bierlow.  An invoice clerk.
1901 - boarding with a Holmes family in Sheffield.  A stationery engine driver.
1911 - with wife Sarah and three children in Bordesley, Birmingham.  A stationery engine driver.

Mother Esther appears to have died in 1899.

Hi Everyone Thanks,
Thomas Rowland Thexton wasn't missing in 1901 but his wife and Harry are.

I have his WW1 details but in letters from him to his wife say that he has fallen out with his Dad and that his Dad would be suprised he is back in the army. I have no other details to prove this.

I also have his Wife Sarah Ann (Lilley) Thexton in Norwich in 1904 when her daughter by Thomas Mary lydia Thexton dies she is less than a year old.Her death cert has a Charles Henry Thetford on it. Sarah Edna May Thexton is born in Norwich in 1905.The only birth cert for her says Sarah Edna Thetford with Mum as May Thetford /previously Thexton. Unless I have the completely wrong person. But Sarah Ann Thexton is back with Thomas Rowland  in 1911 and has 2 more children by him in the next few years.
I'm confused.

Hi
Yes his parents are John B Thexton and Esther Rowland.

It is these interesting family stories that make trees so fascinating. It is amazing what you can find from the census' and with a bit of guess work make out. I presume Edna as she was known may not be Thomas's but I may be reading this wrong.

I think Thomas Rowland Thexton travelled abroad a lot and was away in America or Canada working possibly on railroads.

I think the criminal record is him not paying child maintenance. Not sure if it is definitely him but could be.
