Eliza Riddle and James Moffit
« Reply #28 on: Sunday 07 March 21 02:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Thank you for all the extra info.

I am interested to know if James Moffit and Eliza Riddle had more than the one son John please.

Also, I assume Eliza's death record may confirm one or more of her parent's names ? A link to this record would be greatly appreciated if possible please.

Warm Regards

Link to the death record for Eliza (Riddle) Moffit. Death records don’t give parents names.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1910/05422/4515641.pdf

It is not possible to know all the children of Eliza Riddle and James Moffit. Given Eliza and James dates of birth, they were probably married in the early 1840s - before marriage registration. Registration of births did not start until 1864, so we will not find the children’s births recorded.
[Read here https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ireland_Civil_Registration ]

Apart from the son John Moffit, searching marriage and death records available, it is possible to identify a couple of their other children.
•   A daughter, Mary Alexander Phillips Moffit who married Henry Falls Bell in 1873. Newspaper report of marriage says she is second daughter of James.
•   A son, James Moffit (unmarried grocer & spirit merchant) who died in 1886, age 26, after returning from England
You might find some more if you search records here (it is free) https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Administration of the estate of James Moffit , died 15 June 1904, only mentions the son John: https://apps.proni.gov.uk/willscalendar_ie/willsSearchResultsDetails.aspx

The son John Moffit (born abt 1856) is in the 1901 census here

and in the 1911 census here

Hi again,

I have just received the following from my cousin John Riddell from Victoria.

"I can't find the letter I mentioned written by my Grandfather but I have found an extract from it.

quote
. I am the only son of the late Robert Riddell whom I often heard him say
came from a place called Legaroe near Ballygawley County Tyrone I think
sometime in 1855.  That he had three brothers George, Thomas and John and
five sisters Ellen. Sarah Hannah, Elizabeth and Ann Jane."

Any info or download links re John, Sarah, Hannah, and Ann Jane would be greatly appreciated.

John is very impressed with all your discoveries to date, and thanks again.

I wonder if John Riddle was the deceased husband of Ellen Riddle nee Donnelly who re-married in 1848. ??

The following link comes with a HUGE health warning over accuracy, it doesn't address the Peter Riddell who is the patriarch of the family in this topic, but there is some interesting perspective from an 1884 author on that surname, including the Ulster Riddells (and variant surname spellings).  Anyway, just offering it as something for folk to read (and reject if you so wish - rather than not having had the opportunity to do so in the first place):

http://www.seekingmyroots.com/members/files/G005367.pdf

Other than references to Peter Riddell as the father in several mid 1800s marriages near Ballygawley, and as father in those County Monaghan baptisms I posted (which may or may not be relevant), I'm starting to wonder did Peter maybe die early, say in the period 1820 - late 1840s? The records of that era simply aren't online, that I can see.

Hi,

I'm one of the direct descendents of Peter Riddell.  My father was (Charles) Ivor McLaren Riddell, his father was Charles Riddell, his father Thomas Riddell, his father Thomas Riddell, his father Peter Riddell.  Then I'm completely stuck.  I must admit I couldn't get any further a few years ago so stopped and focused more on the McLarens (my paternal Grandmother was a McLaren).

Does anybody have anything on Peter Riddell, or any advice on how to go about researching this further, please?  I was born in Scarva, Down but have lived in England since I was 4.  I'd be happy to take a trip over to Millix and the surrounding areas if it would help, but I don't really know how best to research once I'm there.

Maybe the records in the Presbyterian church would be a good place to start?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Niall
