Census entry missing regarding James Butler 1802
« on: Thursday 04 March 21 08:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello.
I have been researching Richard Harding Butler and thought  I had found him in a census entry for 1851, staying with an aunt and uncle in London with possible 3 sisters, Rebecca, Mary Anne and Ann plus a potential cousin, Richard Harding, on ancestry. After searching I discovered on Familysearch, a family with Jame Butler (father), Ann his wife and children, Richard, Rebecca and Ann on the 1841 census living in St.John, Surrey.
Why can I not find this 1841 census entry on Ancestry?
Also I am assuming, St.John is in London. Could anyone confirm this or tell me where it is?
Thank you.

The family has been transcribed as Balter by Ancestry

HO107/1087/1 folio 26, page 44 - Vine Yard, St John Horsleydown
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Is this the entry you found on FS?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQV1-ZW1
If so and this happens again, as in this case, its likely to be a transcription error on the part of one site or the other.

The FS entry tells you the
Piece No 1087  Folio No 26 and Page No 44

Search Ancestry England Census 1841 (which gives the option of using the Piece/Folio/Page)
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/8978/

put in just a first name James, birthplace Ireland, and the Piece / Folio and page numbers  and up pops  "Balter" at the top of the list. Its near enough to Butler to be worth a look at the image.

Not always that easy,  but its another option if you get stuck.

Find My Past has them as Butler living at Vine Yard, St John, St Olave Southwark, London & Surrey

James(1802) is down as being a Lab (labourer) born in Ireland as are his wife Ann(1804) and son Richard(1828).  Rebecca (1836) and Ann (1839) are born in Surrey.

This looks like Ann's birth registration

Trish, is Ann Butler’s birth on FreeBMD too? I can find the birth but not that the mmn is Harding.
