I thought the 17 years' suffering sounded medical...(which would make a long sea voyage 'inadvisable'.) Wonder what happened to the £10? At least the Scalby school children had copies of Pilgrim's Progress!

The letter from Robert Turnbull to his niece (Robert Hope's sister) was 1887, before the Golden Wedding; I made a mistake typing the date.

Robert Hope's letter from Melbourne (to his sister) was August 1864.
