Australia/Van Diemen's Land: Mrs Wardley 1870s
« on: Thursday 04 March 21 11:27 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know of Wardleys who had a child/relative/ward at boarding school in Hackness, Yorkshire, run by Robert Turnbull, and visited Hackness, nr Scarborough from Tasmania?

In 1877 Robert (husband of Mary Watson of Scalby) writes to inform his nieces of his Golden Wedding and mentions that he has had no reply (to his gift of £10) from Mrs Wardley in Australia, who wants to return to England. His nephew Robert Hope had emigrated to Melbourne c 1863 but had died a few years later.

Very difficult to find anything with such scant information but here's a couple of snippets.

The marriage of Robert TURNBULL to Mary WATSON at Scalby is listed as being in 1837, meaning that a Golden Wedding would be celebrated in 1887.

Robert Turnbull of Hackness is listed in UK census entries as being a 'land agent' (plus 'farmer' in 1881) with no mention of running a school.  In 1861 his daughter Anne's occupation is 'governess' but by 1871 her occupation isn't listed. In 1881 the property next to his is named as a 'girls' school' and the school mistress is one Mary Ann MURRAY with no others listed at the same address so it would seem there were no boarders.

There is a slight Tasmanian connection in 1851 where a Henry John REID, 18, born Van Diemans Land, is an 'ag pupil' in the household of Robert Turnbull.  Tasmanian information for this Henry REID shows his parents as Henry and Maria Susanna Reid (unfortunately no previous surname for the mother, and no indication of how/when they arrived in Tasmania).  Henry John REID stays in England and I didn't see any WARDLEY connection to him.  But it's clutching at straws here especially as Henry REID obviously left Tasmania many years before Richard mentioned Mrs Wardley.

The implication in the correspondence is that Mrs Wardley had gone to Australia from England.  Again - too may of that name to be sure.

Perhaps the names of the nieces to whom he wrote may help.

There are too many men named Robert HOPE to be able to narrow down any connection there - names of his parents and death date may provide some clues, but again any link would be difficult to find.

Many thanks for looking! I stated the wrong decade for the Golden Wedding. :o  A person whose Turnbull tree has resisted 'unlocking' said she saw the pupil entry in the 1851 census and one from Van D's Land in the Hackness (church) visitors' book (parent of pupil?) but had had no success following up.

Ancestry bombarded me with 'marriage' hints for Robert Hope, all wrong, but I did wonder who his uncle Robert T would want to send £10 to. I'm going to look for links with Robert Hope's sister, Eliz. Turnbull (Hope) Muir, since he had lived with her in Liverpool in 1861.

I wonder if any of Robert Turnbull's  250 donated 'Pilgrim's progress' books are still extant in Scalby?!

Thank you again.

So was this letter to the nieces in 1887 or 1877?

Can you give Robert Hope's parentage please?  Aussie death and marriage registrations include the parents' names and spouse name and marriage details which can help immensely in sifting out the correct person.  (Much more useful than UK ones!!) Of course, the informants do not always know those details but if they do include them...............  :)

I can't distinguish him on any shipping lists so far but there's others of the same name.

The letter was 1887: I tried to attach it but 'too big'

Robert Hope: father James Hope   (b Gretna 1801-d.Knaresborough 1846)
                    mother Ann Turnbull (b. Knaresborough 1806, d.1844)
Robert was born in Annan, 1837,orphaned by 1846,brought up in Knaresborough.
He was in Liverpool in 1861, living with siblings Elizabeth Turnbull (Hope) Muir + Emma Hope but seems to have emigrated before his sister Mary Jane's 1864 marriage, also in Liverpool.
Joseph Muir was a draper, as was Robert. Robert's grandparents William Turnbull  and Mary Andrews (Lund) were in the flax/linen trade. Mary lived until c1863.

I wonder why Uncle Robert Turnbull thought it 'inadvisable' for Mrs Wardley to return to England?
Still locked out of the Tree!!!

Thanks,
Elizabeth
