Location of Leeds Grave
« on: Thursday 04 March 21 13:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I’m trying to locate my great grandads grave in Leeds.
He was hung at Armley Prison Leeds and buried there apparently in an unmarked grave. I was told a few years back by someone at the prison that 16 bodies were exhumed due to them needing more room for extension of a wing and they were moved. I cannot find out where to.
Any help appreciated. His name was Lorraine it Loraine Lax. The year was 1926 when he was executed. Thanks

It's quite possible that they were moved to another area on the same site.

This posting on another site corroborates the suggestion.

Doesn't mean that any of these 16 could be "your" chap though

Just to add to the above, that info was the easy part but remember this graveyard was the final resting place of 10,000 [ten thousand] souls from both the 1st and 2nd world wars together with locals.
Many of the grave No's are just an unmarked space.

Thank you so much for that info.
I tried to get the info years ago from Armley Prison and all they could tell me was he had been moved but didn’t know where to!
Could I ask you how you managed to find the info please? Thanks A

The record was transcribed by others on https://yorkshireburials.uk/ website.
If you are within the Leeds boundary the graveyard is easy to locate.
[For safety take someone else with you, not a safe place to visit by ones self]
Do a search for the graveyard - wortley cemetery armley for the location.

So after the above information is it you intention to visit the graveyard to have a quick look?
I have a layout plan in front of me as we speak, could still be a long winded search bearing in mind there is a high probability there wouldn't be a grave visible just a grassed over space!
 Brian
Just to add, I have sent you a personal message giving directions to the grave after using the main entrance from Tong Road.

Final comment regarding above grave:
Checked to see if the grave has been marked, nothing found as in memorial inscription.

For anyone wanting a location for similar burials.
[Remains from Armley Jail are all buried to the rear of marked graves on the right hand side of the vehicle entrance]
All grassed over with no visible signs of ground been disturbed.
Marker is the large tree surrounded by spring flowers seen on entrance.
