Thomas Hanks (1805) Parents?
« on: Thursday 04 March 21 16:05 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Hanks was born in Merton, Oxon, apparently on 27 April 1805. He married Mary Talor (1807-1867) on 6 April 1838 in Wendlebury.

Please can anyone identify his parents?

If he married in 1838 the marriage should name his father.

The couple were married 6 April 1836 in Wendlebury so there are no fathers' names on the record. Witnesses were John Pinfold and Maryann Nelson.

I cannot see any baptisms for surname Hanks in Merton , apart from one in the 1600s. A search for Thomas Hanks 1800 +/- 10 years in Oxfordshire gives only this one :

Thomas Hanks son of William Hanks and Ann 16 Dec 1802 at Garsington.

EDIT - where does the date 27 Apr 1805 come from ?

Thank you all for your input.

I am aware of the 1802 birth of a Thomas at Garsington but he made an entirely different marriage.

The 27 April birth date is, so far as I am concerned, speculative, having come from a single Ancestry tree without any supporting evidence.

Regaards,

Keith

Hi,

There is also a baptism for Thomas Hanks 23-12-1804 in Kelmscott the s/o William & Eamey Hankes.

Thanks Alan, that could be useful. According to Google Maps Kelmscott is about 30 miles south west of Wendlebury.

I should perhaps add that the suggested birth of 1805 in Merton is based on entries recorded jn a complete series of census entries from 1841.

Thanks Alan. That could be useful.

According to Google Maps the two parishes are about 30 miles apart.

For clarity I should perhaps add that the reputed Merton birth in 1805 is based upon information retrieved from successive census returns.
