Ann Hunt and Samuel Hunt birth and death?
« on: Friday 05 March 21 17:33 GMT (UK) »
In searching for some relatives I find two children that seem to have passed at a young age.

I have an Ann Hunt born about 1837, possibly Little Torrington, Devon or possibly Ashreigney or Brushford Devon.

Also a Samuel Hunt born about 1839 possibly Little Torrington, Devon or possibly Ashreigney or Brushford Devon.

Unable to find a baptism for either.

Parents were

John Hunt 1791–1879  His birth year is variously listed as 1791-1795 on various documents  Death record says 1795.  Another post regarding a possible birth for John Hunt https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=845435.0

Mary Pope  1809–

They appear in the 1841 census for Little Torrington as attached.  I believe I am reading Samuel correctly and the age does not match other known children.

An added child that adds to confusion is an Ann Hunt who was born 13 Jun 1831 Ashriengy, Devon to John Hunt and first wife Elizabeth Jerman.   I have a copy of the document that spells out both parents.   This would not seem to match the Ann on the 1841 census

I am missing something but can't seem to find anything for either beyond the census

Thanks for the Samuel and Ann baptism info

I meant to add that the record for Ann 1831 was from  England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1936 and recorded in Ringsash

If the child dies in Devon villages mentioned, would the death be registered in Exeter?

The two do not appear in the 1851 Canada Census with parents and other siblings

Burial in Ashreigny 20 June 1831 Elizabeth Hunt 36 of Bridge Reave and Ann Hunt age 1 day of Bridge Reave.

This is before the start of civil registration, so there would be no death certificate, just the burial.

sorry, later realised you were looking for the deaths of the later Ann & Samuel. If they had died in their home parish, the deaths should have been registered at Torrington

Thanks for the burial info!

I have the death of Elizabeth Jerman as 20 Jun 1831 Ashringey, Devon, England but the source is unconfirmed.  I have a baptism for Ann 13 Jun 1831 Ashringey, Devon, England and I have that image.

So possibly Elizabeth died in child birth.  Would they have baptized the child it it died at birth?

More research on Elizabeth

date of the baptism is 18 Jun 1831 on the parish register, daughter of John, blacksmith, and Elizabeth of Bridge Reave.
Yes, children who were not expected to survive were baptised privately, probably at home. If they lived, there was later the public part of the baptism, being welcomed into the church.

I wonder if the minister writing up the Ringsash entry for Ann Hunt made an error with the date, if he was writing up later from notes or memory. Both entries appear to be the same child, father John a blacksmith, and living at Bridge Reave. She can't have been baptised June 13 & 16 and buried aged 1 day.

I don't know if you've seen the Ringsash entry, it names Elizabeth's parents as Philip & Mary Jerman.
