Wife of William Berry, b.1797 Lynton, Devon
« on: Friday 05 March 21 17:56 GMT (UK) »
I’m following the family of William Berry born 1797 Lynton, Devon, and in particular his wife, who according to census information was called Frances.

William Berry married a Frances Lord on 1 Aug 1835, Martinhoe. An Ancestry tree indicates that both William and Frances had been married previously - William had been married to Agnes Delbridge (marr: 17 April 1820, Martinhoe, Devon) and Frances had been married to a Richard Lord (5 March 1828, Plymouth, Devon).  It also says that Frances had one child with Richard Lord before he died in 1832( Elizabeth b.1830 d.1835 Milltown, Martinhoe, Devon).

From census records I can see that children with Frances and William Berry – all born Martinhoe, Devon.

Joanna Berry 1821
William Berry b.1830
Grace Berry b.1836
James Berry b.1837
John Berry b. 1839 M quarter Barnstaple vol 10 page 50
Frederick Berry b.1841, M quarter Barnstaple vol 10 page 46
David Berry b. 1843, M quarter Barnstaple vol 10 page 48
Ann Berry b. 1845 D quarter Barnstaple, vol 10, page 45

GRO records give mmn for John, Frederick, David and Ann as WINDMILL – so that fits with the Ancestry tree.

The place of birth for Frances WINDMILL is different on 1841 (not given), 1851 (Lidbrook, Gloucester), 1861 (Pensford, Somerset) & 1871 (Monmouthshire).  There is a Lydbrook in the Forest of Dean, so not that far from Monmouthshire, so I’m guessing this is the correct area but I’ve not been able to find a baptism for Frances Windmill and therefore establish who her family were.

Can anyone help me please?

The 1835 marriage register confirms that they were widower and widow respectively. One of the witnesses was a Matthew LORD.
There were 3 WINDMILL baptisms in Pensford around 1800 to a Richard & Elizabeth at the Wesleyan Chapel. (James, John & Mary)

just checking the siblings of Frances, and the last, baptised on same day as mother's burial,
Mary Winmill baptised 12 Nov 1815, daughter of James, workman in a tin manufactory, and Mary abode Lidbrook.

Thank you both for helping finding Frances’ family. The book of baptisms will be very useful to look for Frances other siblings, in addition to Mary - their mother obviously dying in childbirth. By 1815 Frances would be 11 and within a few years would have been looking for work, maybe that’s how she got to move to Devon?
