Miles Family Tree
« on: Friday 05 March 21 22:41 GMT (UK) »
So I was under the impression that I have deep Welsh roots, through my maternal side. Despite it's sound, my 'Miles' line goes back in the North Pembrokeshire/South Cardiganshire area by about four hundred years to William Miles who was born, circa. 1605 in Eglwyswrw. However, his parents are apparently William Miles (b. 1580) and Jane Walkop/Walkup (which is a Scottish name; her own mother seemingly has the surname 'Robinson'). Seemingly, William's father was Sir Miles ap Thomas, but now the family (Thomas) line is all the way west in Llanigon, Brecknockshire. As far as I am concerned travel for most people was extremely limited and in a geographically difficult place like Wales this would be more of a case, so what is going on here? I know that information is more vague the further back you go, but I am still wondering how accurate all of this is and if it is true how unusual was it for people to move around Wales at this time?

what are the sources in Eglwyswrw before 1740 given that the parish registers are lost and there are very few BTs?

The problem with online trees is that one person posts a tree with 'unknown' sources and everyone else copies it without verifying the information.  Then because so many people have the same information others think it is correct ....

Maybe start from what you know and can confirm with documentation and try and work backwards yourself, that way you can feel confident that your tree is correct.  There are plenty of people on here prepared to try and help if you need it.

Hi, I read your post and was intrigued. I have the last name Miles and live SW Wales. Whatever you found out about the history I would be more than happy to share.
