Air passenger lists?
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 09:36 GMT (UK) »
Are there any sources of passengers arriving in NZ by air?

My father arrived in 1948 by flying boat from Sydney - how he got there I have no idea, but he started from a farm near Montrose, Scotland.

I am trying to establish whether his father accompanied him, or arrived separately around the same time.  Family Search has lists of arrivals, but that seems to be by ship only.

Hi Gordon,

The only source of information I have found of people arriving from Scotland about late 1940's/50's, to the USA, is their air ticket, on Ancestry.

Don't think there are sources of air arrivals online for NZ.

My oral history includes my first cousins flying from Sydney to Auckland in flying boats 1948.

Trove digitised newspapers seem to list Planes in same section as Shipping in that era.

Qantas were operating RSE (3 letter code for airport) out of Rose Bay Water Aerodrome, using Catalina planes, regular routes to NZ ....

I do not know if there are official archives holdings for outward passenger lists from NSW in that era, sorry.   Perhaps there may be  Qantas historians who may know.

Hi Gordon,
I did make a start several years ago transcribing the names of the passengers and crew from the Tasman Empire Airways Ltd (TEAL) Flying Boats between Auckland/Sydney/Auckland from 28 May 1940 which appeared in the Auckland Star newspaper.
I have not transcribed any 1948 lists.
After an initial start I have not made any further progress as house builds intervened.
I suggest that if you know an approx date of arrival you could check the Auckland Star newspaper around that time period.
Alternatively if you send me a PM with the names and approx date(s) I would be happy to take a look for you.
Ed: Unfortunately at this stage Paperspast - Auckland Star only goes up to 1945.

Cheers

Many thanks for the offer - I'll message you.

As you saw, the Auckland Star is not on Papers Past at that date. A friendly librarian tells me that the only publicly available archive is in Auckland, and I'm in Christchurch. The passenger lists do not appear in any of the (few) 1948 newspapers indexed on Papers Past.

Thanks again,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,
I contacted Paperspast Digital Services in respect of digitising the Auckland Star from 1945.
They have advised that they now have permission to digitise the newspaper from 1946 to 1991.  However it is going to take them some time to do this.  Currently they are looking at starting this work sometime after July 2023.
We will have to be patient!

They do a fantastic job and their work is very much appreciated.
