There seems to be no evidence that he was in the armed forces. There is evidence from contemporary newspapers that Haymeads was still functioning as a civilian hospital at that time (see for instance the report of the death there of 70 year old Arthur George Salmon in the Chelmsford Chronicle of 13 June 1941).
