St. Joseph's institution Orpington
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 14:45 GMT (UK) »
Did this institution have anything to do with Barnardo's?.  Trying to find info re granddad George Goodwin age 8 on 1901 census as an "inmate" and whom/where  he was sent to on discharge in March 1902.   I gather he was the responsibility of St. Olave's union.
thanks.

Hi there,

that's correct.  It had St. Ann's orphanage for girls beside.   I'm trying to source records to find out how he came to be there and where he went to.   I have been given some details from Catholic Children's Society who informed me he had had 3 siblings whom family didn't know existed.

regards
Di

Do you know where he was on the 1911 census?

Is anything known about his parents?  One or both may have died when the children were young.

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I'm just doing a stab in the dark, but I wonder if this is George's birth record?

GOODWIN, GEORGE       -
GRO Reference: 1893  J Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 616

As you can see, illegitimate.  Anything on Ancestry re admission?  1901 census address is given as Farnborough, Bromley, Kent - Inmate of institution.

Hi there,
Granddad was listed on 1901 C as inmate in this institution.
From being an only child B1893/4 George William Goodwin, Dad George Wm. and mum Sarah Ann/Sally Ann.   it's becoming apparent his dad was George & mum Julia nee Lynch and some 6 siblings namely John 1888, Annie 1890, Benjamin 1891, George 1893, Robert 1894, and Alice 1895.  Family believed him to be a Barnardo boy but no trace in organisation despite there was (long lost) a bible inscribed to him and he donated yearly. Granddad was a butler, wife Beatrice Amy and 3 daughters.  He died in 1967 Edensor, Derbyshire.  Is he on anyone's tree.? Not much  on Genes, Family, org or BMD to determine if he is my granddad.  It seems, if George & Julia are his parents, all members spent time in hospitals, poor/workhouses in London. Thanks in anticipation.PS. I've come across a George B1893 to mother Goodwin , Marleybone so will chase up a birth certificate.
