Tank Corps Discharge
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 12:45 GMT (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters

Just delving into some new areas of research .... I wonder if anyone could decipher what these discharge details mean please?

This was for Corporal Lay who had joined the Tank Corps in 1921 but was out just about a year later.

It's not a very good pic, so here are the details ...
"Para 156 (a) Free.  TA Regs
13 2079 Car 6890"

Many thanks

It's actually Para 156(3) not 156(a).

Para 156(3) of the Territorial Army Regulations which I think is Discharge "at his own request".

"Free" I would guess means that his discharge was granted without charge.

I have no idea what the rest of it means!

I'm posting the link in case anyone else wants to have a look:

The B 2079 Cav 6890 is similar to the man next but one and I'd suggest is his certificate of discharge:

Dear Max and Shaun

Thankyou for your responses - really helpful to have the mistranscription of the "a" pointed out.  Regret the link to the IWM just leads to an empty box - perhaps I need a subscription for that one.

All helps to add to the picture of Cpl Lay who's military days were over, he went home, having survived 4 years in WW1, plus his extra service in the Tank Corps, met a lovely girl and lived happily ever after!

Hopefully this one works:

http://www.4thbnnf.com/wordpress/home/research-resources/family-resources/3044-2/  His form has (Cav) indicating it was a cava,ry form, I doubt it varied much, if at all,  from the infantry one at the link otherwise it would be a different form number.
