Loughborough House School, Brixton 1750-1815
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 14:29 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know of, or have acces to, any books or reecords relating to Loughborough House School? Is it perhaps mentioned in any Surrey history books?
I am interested in what dates when the following gentelmen were teachers at the school.
Rev Richard Turner Snr 1720-1791
Rev Richard Turner Jnr 1752-1788
Rev William Hancock Roberts 1745-1814
I know about the books the Turners wrote and of their National Biography entires.
Richard Snr wrote books between 1761 and 1766 and two of thes say 'teacher at Worcester' but don't identify the shool. A later book in 1787, a course in mathematics and geometry may have been at Loughborough house.
Richard Jnr wrote books between 1778 and 1788 and these were aimed as school texts, at least one mentions Loughborough House School
I also know that shortly after Richard Snr died, in 1791, his wife Sarah wrote her will and gave her place of residence as Loughborough House.
I know that William Roberts was headmaster at Kings School, Worcester, until 1788 and that he was married to the Sarah, the daughter of Richard Snr so I suspect Roberts was at Loughborough when his mother in law Sarah wrote her will.
Any help greatly appreciated.

There is an item in 1790 mentioning Dr Roberts as one of the Masters at Loughborough House School.

"LOUGHBROUGH HOUSE SCHOOL
The following speeches were delivered by
the Young Gentlemen at Loughborough House
School, on Thursday the 16th inst. the selection
of which does credit to Dr. JAMES and Dr. RO-
BERTS, the Masters. The excellence of de-
livery, by the respective Scholars, reflect much
credit on Mr. CRESSWICK, their Teacher of Elo-
cution. ..."

You may have already seen:

"DIED ...
A few days since, at Margate, the Rev. Dr. Richard Tur-
ner, son of Dr. Turner, Loughborough-house, Surrey."

"MARRIED ...
   On Thursday se'night, at St. George's, Hanover-square,
the Rev. Richard Turner, L.L.D., of Loughborough House,
Surrey, to Mrs. Farrer, of Stafford-Row, Queen's Place."

Friday,  Nov. 10, 1786, "Morning Herald"

Some lengthy obits for Dr. TURNER in 1791, but none that state what years he was at Loughborough House.

Thanks for those.
I have not sen the long obit - just a short one liner in The Times. The marriage is Richard Jnr, if that wasn't already obvious.

From April 15, 1791 - April 18, 1791, "Lloyd's Evening Post"

(The same obit appeared in April 19, 1791 - April 21, 1791, "General Evening Post")
