Italian capitano, 1821 portrait
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 15:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have this old painting which I am trying to ID. It was painted in March 1821 and is likely to be Italian. The name is at the bottom on the back. I can make out “...capitano di...”. I think the word after that is “Granaglio” (it might not be) but I can’t read the word at the start.
Do you have any ideas please,

I think it's a name - "Longino" thus:

Longino Capitano di Granaglio

Granaglio(ne) is a town/cluster of villages near Bologna.

This link gives a derivation of the name Longino:

The first word could be Cugino = cousin.

The last word could be Gianoglio (rather than Granaglio), which does appear to be an Italian surname.

I wondered if it could be the name of the ship that he was captain of....Gianaglio VE1 or similar.

That’s interesting. I hadn’t really given any thought to the VEI or VE1.

I think VE 1 is likely to be Victor Emmanuel 1

So the painting done in his reign.?

Do we think that writing was contemporary to the painting, or added later? Letter formation and style looks quite modern to me.  :)

Hmm... That could be the case. The fact that he is VE1 rather than VE would support that.
It is named and dated to the day though, so whoever wrote it seemingly had some specific information.
