Thanks, Shaun.  It pretty well puts an end to my hope of finding something in army records.

There are no soldiers named Syred in the "British Army, Worldwide Index" for 1841.

Any soldiers named Herbert Ward?
Syred may have evolved from something else.

Edit.

Origin: Old English Sige-raed
Variants: Siret, Sirett(e), Sired, Syrad, Syratt,

Frogsmile's post today explains about regiments' stations and depots.
Frogsmile has also added 2 links about regimental movements to another thread about army barracks in Ireland in 19thC. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=807445.new;topicseen#new
