Have you contacted the tree owner to see where they got the info from?

Have you found him on any census?

His parents are shown as Thomas Syred and Mary Ayres who married 16/11/1802 Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire.   This couple having children baptised there from 1804 until 1818 and don't appear to have left in that time frame, nor did they have a son named Herbert!

As to Herbert Ward Syred - the only time I can see a mention of him is on a daughter Caroline's baptism in 1838 at Dorking, Surrey when he is plain Herbert (and mother Hannah).   Her mother said to be Hannah Carpenter and looks like Caroline is with maternal grandparents in 1841.   There is no marriage between a Hannah Carpenter and said Herbert either.

Would suggest this tree is somewhat up the pole (as sadly so many are).

The 1838 baptism of Caroline also mentions that Herbert was a Soldier

Norton may be a misreading of Merton, in bad handwriting. Alternatively, is it the pronunciation of Norbiton in local dialect. Both places are relatively close to Epsom & Dorking.

Michael.

Thanks to all who responded.  I've been researching Herbert Syred for 10+ years.  Problem: he appears in no census, civil registration, ship's list etc.  The only likely church record is a baptism in 1818 in Brandeston Suffolk.  Mother: Sarah Syred.  Other than that he appears only on his daughter's records.  Sarah Syred and Hannah Carpenter Syred are not in the 1840 or 1850 census records but both appear in 1860.  Hannah is a widow living with her father.

Yesterday I received information ,via family history (a note inside the cover of a book), that Herbert died at a military barracks in Ireland probably around 1850.  While checking into that I discovered this totally "new" Herbert Ward Syred!

I welcome any suggestions.  Jann
