Advice needed - WW1 Disability papers & service/discharge in 1890
« on: Monday 08 March 21 13:04 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching Edward Taylor who enlisted in R.G.A. in April 1915.

He was discharged due to injury in 1919. Among his discharge papers, there's a "Statement as to Disability" (attached) which refers to previous service/discharge and appears to say:
Regiment - 5th Hardwicks
Date discharged - 1890
Cause of discharge - TIME. EX.

I'd be grateful if anyone could advise if I'm reading this correctly or shed any light on it.  I can't find any record of 5th Hardwicks.

Thanks ...... Malcolm

Thanks Shaunj and tonepad.

When I first saw it, I did wonder if it was supposed to be Warwicks.  However, the 5th Ardwicks looks a much better bet based on his Manchester roots and being a volunteer force. Edward would have been age 17 in 1890.  I'll try to look into this further.

Any thoughts on what TIME. EX. would mean?

Thanks .... Malcolm

Tony

Would that indicate he signed up for a period of time which then finished?

Thanks...Malcolm

Thanks Tony for that explanation.

Tameside Council in Ashton-under Lyne holds the Manchester Regiment Archives.  I'll check with them but it seems unlikely there'll be much, if any, personal information about volunteers unless they were officers.
